FASHION BRAND MANAGEMENT

THE MANAGEMENT OF CREATIVITY AND THE CREATIVE MANAGEMENT OF A LUXURY FASHION BRAND
AIM

This master course aims to create the figure of a manager who can develop a brand in the coming years by tuning its identity in to match the spirit of the period, making strategic decisions, playing a leading role in their implementation, and speaking to the subconscious in order to win the battle in the consumers’ minds.

For instance, Chanel is a classic luxury brand, but in an internet-driven economic scenario where people buy both high and low-range products, regardless of their status, the brand has decided to sell through vending machines in Las Vegas and commercially exploit the concept of “the moment”. Again, as 90s avant-garde has become the new fashion heritage, Raf Simons is now at Dior and Hedi Slimane is at Saint Laurent, without Yves. Lastly, in a society where values are fragmented, have a dual significance and are often grouped together according to the principle of syncretism, Galliano (the absence of presence) has been named as new designer for Maison Martin Margiela (the presence of absence). In the same way, what will Gucci be like after Tom Ford and Frida Giannini?.

Fashion Brand Management is the most complete program for those hoping to gain expertise in shaping, preserving, renewing and communicating the uniqueness of a brand. It is the best solution for those who already have a background in design and want to acquire further management skills, and those who have come from a business background and want to learn how to operate outside of the box. The two paths both lead to the figure of creative manager and manager of creativity for the luxury fashion world.

DESCRIPTION

This course is visionary and concrete, creative and managerial, leading and relational, innovative but well rooted in the know-how coming from the industry, competitive and beyond competition, involved in all the processes from production to communication. Therefore, its program is intensive, wide-reaching and intensive. It is composed of three interconnected units:

Vision, research and trend- based. It’s about brand identity, buyology, innovation vs. heritage, the way the human, society and industry interact to achieve a balance.

Management, business-based. It’s about strategy and concreteness, marketing and merchandising, retail and administration, law and logistics.

Communication, senses-based. It’s about conveying messages in conventional or alternative ways, using original materials (graphic, video, written) both for the real and the digital environments.

This course includes field trips (Milan Fashion Week, Pitti Trade Fair, the production site of a top level company, and Ferragamo shop/museum), guest lectures by managers and visionairies, and two portfolio projects, a start-up task at mid-term, and a rebranding task as the final task. Vision

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Based on their personal aptitudes and the skills acquired in the different teaching modules, students can aim for a career that will potentially lead to a top level position in a luxury fashion company, such as: Brand Manager, Marketing Manager, Communication Manager, License Manager, Product Manager. A second employment opportunity is potentially the Creative Agency for trend analysis, brand building and communication. Due to the particular cut style of the master’s course, which aims to create a flexible, autonomous profile, a third natural opening is Global Consultant, Start-up Manager, Project Manager and Entrepreneur.

HOW TO APPLY

The course is open to graduates (or equivalent) holding a valid academic degree. Applicants with no academic degree but with significant previous experience in Fashion or Luxury, will be considered. Written and spoken English is required.

Candidates will be selected according to their cv and motivation letter. After a first selection, the Head of Department will organize a personal interview for final enrolment admission.

AIM

Fashion Marketing and Communication Managers are specialists in maximizing a company’s visibility and market share who do so by gathering information from different sources, writing marketing and communication plans, and suggesting practical actions levering both on media and extra media activities. This figure can work directly for the company, for an agency, or cover a position in one of the operators involved in the implementation of a plan, e.g. a magazine. This job requires analytical and planning skills as well as the use of images and words for one single simple purpose: conveying unique messages that are clear and effective.

Above and below the line, conventional and unconventional, online and offline: these distinctions no longer exist because modern communication is integrated, and fashion, as a way of expressing an individual or collective identity is already the best means of communication. Moreover, following the economic crisis, it is clear that marketing cannot be taken as an infallible set of formulas, especially in fashion, where trends and changes in style always weight more than any type of numerical analysis. Therefore, since fashion is the most complete expression of society and human behaviour, simply understanding the complexity of fashion is paramount to marketing it.

Studying on a general marketing and communication course does not guarantee students a position in the fashion industry. Instead, attending the Polimoda Fashion Marketing & Communication course opens doors to a potential career in all fields. In fact, while Robert Polet, who came from Unilever, left Gucci years ago, Apple has recently hired Angela Ahrendts from Burberry, Paul Deneve from Yves Saint Laurent and Jacob Jordan from Louis Vuitton.

Make your plans!

DESCRIPTION

Taught by teachers with direct experience in the fashion industry, this course perfectly integrates the three words contained in its title: Fashion, Marketing and Communication. Students gain experience of the typical working environment of a creative agency when completing two team projects that will form part of their portfolio. The mid-term is about planning the launch of a new fashion magazine, with its target readership, budget, table of contents, mock-up, and minimum two pages featuring both editorial and commercial contents. The final project focuses on writing an integrated marketing and communication plan for a company, including the use of media and extra media, and visualizing the key message in practice by using at least one of the media involved (e.g. video, packaging, installation, etc.). The program is very intensive but also includes a series of guest lectures and seminars, and students have free access to two important events: Pitti Uomo and Milan Fashion Week.

The modern travel bag, the little black dress, fragrances, open toe shoes, women’s trousers, bikinis, leather boots, the destructured jacket for men, skinny jeans, sunglasses at night, avant-garde shapes and cuts, these are only few of the products that created new eras and defined contemporary lifestyle along the decades. Great products are key as they reflect the spirit of the time, always repeating and yet always changing:menwear is the new womenswear, leather goods turned from accessory to core category and womanswear is challenged by wearable technology and the ultimate perspective of invisible-wear.

Merging and combining categories and roles brings to the forefront the importance of ‘who is actually working alongside designers’ in production. These experts preserve know-how and foster innovation, they check trends and maintain brand identity by maximizing creativity and balancing the collection. Furthermore, the success of e-commerce is redefining the role of the store, always less point of sale and increasingly a meeting point where techniques of up-selling and cross-selling are fundamental, as well as the ability to visualize the product in a creative way, not only in the store window.

This course creates an expert profile in fashion products, someone that understands the new scenario, is involved in production and retail, or, an expert that is the vital link between the two.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

LUXURY BUSINESS

STATE OF THE ART
AIM

Supposedly ‘timeless’ - yet today even luxury is not immune to trends.

Supposedly immaterial and service-based - instead luxury can also be conceptual and dynamic. As monopoly of big cartels, luxury is probably the only sector where it is still possible to start up new ventures, when having the right intuition. Luxury today is mainly finance-driven but cannot exist without culture. It is a precise and restricted sector however today, everything from the mass markets has been already ‘luxurified’.

There are insights in so-called mature markets, with some also in the so-called contrasting BRIC markets; every emerging market is different from one another and, following on from the crisis, some mature markets can also be considered as ‘emerging’. As business territory, luxury has been universally defined, but to answer the question: what is luxury? Everyone replies with something different and personal.

This Polimoda advanced level course is open to candidates with industry experience wishing to upgrade and enhance their knowledge and skills, as well as to those from closely related industries who are looking to enter Luxury at the highest level.

Culture, imagination, originality, and the ability to make a dream come true, a dream, commercially and financially viable, challenging competition or standing beyond competition: these are the extra features this master provides.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The philosophy of this advanced program is based on the creation of small class sizes ensuring a high level of instruction and interaction throughout. Limited numbers are also necessary due to the advanced level research and project based nature of instruction.

The program includes classes with resident teachers from the industry, international guest lectures, one-week exchange programs to London and Paris, business workshops and field trips to the most important luxury sites in Italy. Nonetheless, European luxury is mainly produced in and around Florence, and the Florentine Area is where many first class Italian company headquarters are based, proving to be the best location to be able to touch, smell and taste luxury, and live a unique experience.

This intensive program is structured around nine main concepts each following on from one another: craftsmanship, quality, price, prestige, lifestyle, design, brand, authenticity, and uniqueness. All concepts, together, in different doses, are the ingredients for every conceivable and personal definition of luxury.

As part of the final program candidates will be asked to write a start-up project to launch a new enterprise featuring a main idea, cultural research, business models and financial plan. The project will be one-to-one tutored and valid as personal portfolio that may be presented to a company or business angel.

STUDY PLAN

Craftsmanship

Artisans became artists, then all the brands we buy worldwide. Heritage and innovation are empty words if one doesn’t understand the mix of know-how and intuition that stands behind the conception of a great luxury product. Craftsmanship is a magic event, archaeological and futuristic at the same time.

Quality

Quality can be intrinsic or perceived, so in reality luxury doesn’t exist; we create it, through an amazing product but also levering on intangible values, senses and feelings. In this context, the maniacal attention to every little detail makes a big difference. In luxury there shouldn’t be any compromise.

Price

Luxury is the best money can buy, but also the best money cannot buy. Price is not only a business tool but also a value linked to time, e.g. luxury watches can indicate how precious their owners time is. Time for oneself, living with nature, freedom, appreciating culture, and art have become the ultimate luxury.

Prestige

The September issue is press-tige because holding it brings the same social recognition as does walking with the bags which are advertised inside. Luxury in Summer is sinful because it shows luxuria, the shameless exercise of power causing envy and extreme pleasure. A shiny diamond is the end of the world: die[monde].

Lifestyle

The urban environment generates trends at social, cultural, visual and commercial levels. A contemporary flâneur reads the underground press, browses the internet and travels the world in search of unique moments. Contemporary luxury is not immune to the changing spirit of the time.

Design

De-sign means to give meaning. Epidermis, dress, walls and portable electronic devices are all human skins, gazes from the same face. Design of interiors is interior design and cosmetics are the ethics for facing the cosmos. Management of creativity is creative management: the design of new scenarios.

Brand

A brand is originally like a burning wood marking the skin of a guilty conscience. In traditional luxury it was the name of a founder trying to occupy a specific space in the consumers’ mind through generations. Today, nobody is guilty and the attitude towards brands is disenchanted. A luxury brand has nothing to do with logos.

Authenticity

An artistic city where the best quality artefacts are created is not per se a luxury location. It is however, only if the process of creativity, secret and never communicated, is researched, found, a real experienced and personally testified. Authentic luxury is not the certified, nor the authorised or the unauthorised, but the [author]ised.

Uniqueness

The French way to luxury is to manage exclusivity by introducing scarcity where you wouldn’t have it. The American way is to impress with wonderful endorsers. The Italian way is constantly creating that particular exception that makes people feel unique. State of uniqueness is the new luxury standard.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILES

Executive or entrepreneur in the luxury sector.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates may apply for this program if they have experience in luxury or closely related industries, and hold a valid academic degree. English is required. Attendance is mandatory.

LUXURY RETAIL MANAGEMENT

THE TEMPTATION OF BUYING
AIM

Whether it’s about a concept store or an epicenter, a department store or a luxury boutique, a mono brand store or a bespoke service, this master’s course provides the complete toolbox of techniques needed for managing the retail shopping experience, which, in the luxury sector always transcends the mere commercial transaction to become a real emotional experience.

Online sales are now exceeding those of physical stores, and these need to be integrated into one system that includes all channels in order to provide customers with a seamless shopping experience across different touch points. On the other hand, luxury stores tend to reach a monumental, almost religious status, with more and more media for communicating the brand and marketing its products. Here, architectures full of meanings become central. No more guerrilla or pop-up stores. These techniques, once external and alternative, are now internal and fully integrated with shapes, surfaces, colours, sounds, lights, smells, human relations, all the tangible and intangible weaponry that can make the difference to boost sales.

This master’s course answers the questions anyone willing to work in the luxury industry should ask: why, when luxury is so superficial, is it instead necessary? What differentiates luxury from the other segments? What should I sell? Where and how should I set up my stores? What is my store concept? How do I maximize profits? What is the brand experience in my shop? How do I integrate online and off-line sales in order to impact customer loyalty? Luxury is necessary because it tightens the social driver of desire, fosters distinction and, as a result, affects all the other segments. Studying Luxury Retail Management means making the best investment for your future career.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The first part of the master’s course teaches students about the essence of the luxury sector: categories, products, insights, brands, drivers of consumption, operations and forms of distribution, marketing basics, business management and commercial direction. The mid-term project aims to reproduce the distribution system of a major brand.

The second part of the course is more focused on store formats, store management, e-commerce, sensorial communication, and requires a projection into the future, with a final project based on the construction of an integrated online and off-line retail system.

The Luxury Retail Management course includes seminars, guest lectures and field trips, and the two projects can be used as part of the student’s personal portfolio.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Based on their personal aptitudes and the skills acquired in the different teaching modules, students can aim for a career as Retail Buyer, Store Manager, Retail Manager, E-Commerce Manager, Sales Manager, Distribution Manager, Operations Manager and Marketing Manager. In a retail-driven company, these starting positions can potentially lead to the top level positions of CEO and General Manager.

Right in between Designers and Communication Managers, Art Directors in fashion build the image of a brand, curate an exposition space, develop an advertising campaign or a whole editorial issue, create the emotion around a single craft object or an entire collection, they coordinate projects and creative teams, they feel th spirit of the time and move beyond aesthetics.

The Fashion Art Direction 4 years program covers three main areas of study. The first is Object: research, creative and practical skills, giving the student the ability to bring a concept into a tangible format. The second is Subject: the visionary and strategic side of the job, which make the Art Director a figure able to launch a statement, fascinate an audience and hold on a group of collaborators. The third is Project: the output, image, scenario and performance of an orchestrated trip that involves spaces, people and senses, as well as suppliers, clients and agreements.

Far from the first notion of Head of Graphics, the Art Director is a complete profile, a real Chief of Creative Office, a design manager, the leader of visual communications that contemporary fashion is looking for.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In the first year the course focuses on the acquisition of cultural, methodological and technical skills: from anthropology to iconographic research, from basic drawing to computer graphics, from the mood board to the first target image. In the second year, it looks at trends and compresses them into a real book and a video statement. The third year is already at master level: here students learn how to curate a space, package a product, style a collection, plan an advertising campaign. Objectifying a concept, 3D printing, managing the image of a brand, creating and managing a magazine content, planning an entire communication action and leading a creative team, complete the fourth year.

The 4 year course includes seminars and guest lectures, use of a professional photography studio, two field trips per year as well as two technical projects to build a portfolio, and the completion of a period of work experience in a fashion company at the end of the course.

One week in Paris with lectures organized by Linda Loppa is included.
